To All the Blogs Ive Loved Before I first set foot on campus about five years ago for my MIT Admissions job interview, and I made the HUGE mistake of not studying a campus map beforehand. If you havenât visited MIT before, let me warn you (as I wish someone had warned me): the building numbers make little, or no, sense! I ended up running around madly and using the compass on my smartphone to locate the Admissions Office. I finally arrived at my interview a little sweaty and a lot nervous, both puzzled and dazzled by this kooky place. Most of the times I have asked other admissions officers how they got into the profession, they have said âunexpectedly.â My story is no different. When I graduated from college, it actually didnât even occur to me that âadmissions officerâ was a job. I hadnât spared much thought on how college applications were selected or who did the selecting, so naturally working in admissions was nowhere on my radar. When I was in my senior year of college, I searched for opportunities at nonprofit organizations related to diversity and inclusion, which had been long-time passions of mine. A week before graduation, I got a job offer at a college access scholarship foundation in Boston. (Note to any anxious soon-to-be-college-graduates reading: everything will be fine, and you WILL find something!) It was an administrative role and a great opportunity to learn about how nonprofits operate. I did a little bit of accounting, a little bit of fundraising, a little bit of alumnae relations; I also did a lot of answering phones, managing my bossâs schedule, and generally making sure our office was a functioning work environment. The best part of my job was always working with students, reading their applications and interviewing them for the scholarship, getting to know them, and talking to them about college. The only problem was I didnât get to do much of it. So armed with a greater awareness of jobs in higher education, I applied to positions in admissions. MIT Admissions was at the top of my list of places where I wanted to work because of our commitment to diversity, access, and inclusion. Our mission is to enroll a talented and diverse community, in which students can bring their full selves, learn from one another, grow together, and solve big problems during and after their time on our campus. Five years later, Iâm still feeling pretty blessed. I have learned so much from folks followers of our blogs may find familiar, like Mikey, Latasha, and Matt. Iâve traveled to at least 35 different cities and 23 different states to recruit for MIT. I have had the privilege of meeting hundreds of students and of reading the stories of thousands of students through their applications. Being an admissions officer has required constant exercises in empathy and humility and advocacy. It is simultaneously tiring and inspiring. I joked with a friend the other day that I spend my days reading remarkable works of young adult *non-fiction*⦠and my free time reading young adult fiction, because after reading applications all day, itâs all my brain can handle. (Most recently, I read Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi and the To All the Boys Iâve Loved Before trilogy01 If its not already obvious, this is the inspiration for the title of this post. The first book was recently adapted into a very cute movie on Netflix :) by Jenny Han!) And now, after all this time, Iâm on the blogs. And my motivation for being on here and my favorite part of my job are pretty similar. I love stories, and I believe so much in the power of stories. Stories, I think, are essential to creating social change. Statistics may change minds, but stories change hearts and show us the ways in which the problems that we seek to solve are lived and connected. I find the college application process so exciting because for many of you, it might be your first time learning to tell your story, and itâs a skill you will have to use for the rest of your life. And I know that it can be daunting and scary and anxiety-inducing, but I hope that in telling my stories and drawing the curtain back on this process, youâll know a little more about us and trust us with your stories. Second, I fall into group of people who play and love it because the sport I like is very interesting to me and all my brothers do it and even my friends. We all like a big family. Wollstonecraft and Dickens: Fight For Educational Reform Although they wanted it in different ways, Mary Wollstonecraft and Charles Dickens both argued for educational reform. Unhappy with the current state of women, Mary Wollstonecraft, in her A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, demanded equal access to equal education for women. Her main tactic was to persuade people that educating women would not only improve society as a whole but society would not advance until it happened. Unlike Wollstonecraft, Charles Dickens expressed a desire for a complete overhaul of the educational system in his book, Hard Times. Dickens believed that the current utilitarian based educational system lacked humanity (something greatly needed for a complete education); he showed this, not by outright stating it, but by giving an illustration of the system (both in the classroom and at home) and then showing the outcome of the methods used. Women's education as we know it today was non-existent. The education that women received was laughable, at the very least, when compared to the education of men. According to our textbook, the education of women consisted of "basic literacy, embroidery, singing, playing a piano or harpsichord, dancing, sketching, [and] conversational French or Italian." It is not hard to see that it just didn't compare to the education of men. Women weren't just uneducated; they weren't respected by men or even themselves. They also had very little freedom. Everything they owned upon marriage was forfeited to their husbands. This is why some women opted to remain single, but their lives weren't any better than those married. Wollstonecraft knew as well as anyone that she was born into a man's world. She and her sister's worked various jobs trying to earn a living, but it wasn't until she educated herself, with something like a man's education, that she gained freedom and self-respect. This is what s he wanted most for her fellow females. She believed that women deserved equality with men. For this to happen she thought that women would have to be equal to men in their intelligence, and the only way for this to happen would be for them to be educated. Wollstonecraft knew that this was the problem and for there to be any start in improving women's position they would have to be educated more like men. Wardle stated, in his book titled Mary Wollstonecraft: A Critical Biography, that, "She was attacking the attitude which most men of the time showed toward her sex, and she traced it to the inadequate education of women." He goes on further to give a quote from Mrs. Beard stating; "The objects if her special aspersions were customs and opinions, not specific provisions of law affecting women, married and single." That is why she offered "no program of legislation guaranteed to bring about [women's] ?emancipation." Wollstonecraft believed that a good lasting marriage needed partnership between both the husband and the wife. In order to make the thought of women's education more appealing to men she proposed that women be educated in order to make them better mother's (because they could better teach their children) and wives if they married (because they would be better companions) and if they remained single to earn a respectable living. Women, if educated, could also be useful to their husbands after they had lost both their beauty and their function (raising children) because they could also be companions. To aid her argument even further, Wollstonecraft brilliantly brought together women and soldiers for comparison. Both women and solders received education that was both deficient and harmful. Because of this similarity in education, there were also similarities in characteristics (like concern with fine dress and other frivolities). Both are taught total subordination (to obey without unde rstanding why). They both "acquire manners before morals" and are sent out into the world prematurely. This comparison greatly helps her argument. The profession of women was to be mistresses so they, like soldiers, only fulfilled their function for a small period of time. He who comes along greed is condemned to this bottomless pit. Our fears in Banquo stick deep; and in his royalty of nature reigns that which would be feard: tis much he dares: and to that dauntless temper of his murder he hath a wisdom that doth guide his valour to act in safety. There is a conflict between science and religion. To begin with there is the Galileo Controversy. Furthermore there is the issue of the use of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). A third point is about how the universe was created. These three points clearly shows that there is a conflict between science and religion. To begin with there is the Galileo Controversy. Galileo was an Italian astronomer. He was the first man who suggested that the earth is actually the one which revolve around the sun and not the sun revolve around the earth which is what the people from the church believed at that time. When news about his theory was heard by the church they immediately told him to stop spreading his theory to other people because the people from the church interpreted that the bible said that the earth is the centre of the universe and it is in fix position and Galileo`s theory is contradicting with the bible. When he refuse to give up his theory he was placed under house arrest for the rest of his life. Furthermore there is the issue on the use of IVF. Science had found ways in which can help women to get pregnant that is through IVF. I must stress that my religion have no objection in using science to help sick people but using IVF is a different matter. Just the thought of a women getting pregnant by a man`s sperm, who is not her husband, disgust me not to mention it is against my principals, against my beliefs and above all It is against my religion. The reason why they can not get pregnant in the first place is because God did not want them to get pregnant and using IVF in against god`s wishes. Who are we to go and against God wishes? A third point is about how the universe was created. According to science the universe once was just a small space then it quickly expand when a huge explosion happened this is known as the Big Bang and it took 13 billion years for the universe to become what it is now. This is different from what my religion said. According to my religion when God wanted to make the universe he only need to say it and the universe was created instantly. These three points clearly shows that there is a conflict between science and religion. The fact that there is the Galileo Controversy, the fact that the use of IVF which is against God`s wishes and the fact that there is a contradicting explanation about how the universe was created. With this in mind it is clearly to conclude that there is a conflict between science and religion.

It is an even more unfortunate situation when there are children involved. Analysis Of The Poem Caged Bird By Maya Angelou
The poem ââ¬Å"Caged Birdâ⬠by Maya Angelou tells the story of two birds: one bird has the luxury of freedom and the second bird lives its life caged and maltreated by an unknown tyrant. Maya Angelou wrote this poem during the Civil Rights Era, the period when black activists in the 1950ââ¬â¢s and 1960ââ¬â¢s fought for desegregation of African Americans. This poem parallels the oppression that African Americans were fighting during this time period. In ââ¬Å"Caged Birdâ⬠, Angelou builds a strong contrast that shows the historical context of discrimination and segregation through the use of mood, symbolism, and theme. The mood of ââ¬Å"Caged Birdâ⬠changes drastically from stanza to stanza. Angelouââ¬â¢s specific diction choices help to reflect the change from being positive to negative with some elements of hope involved. The parts of the poem involving the free bird provide the reader with a feeling of self government.In contrast, the mood associated with the caged bird is confinment. Despite the negative mood tied to the caged bird there are still elements of hope woven into these stanzas. The first stanza of the poem introduce the free bird.
